The equipment is sensitive enough to detect a leak through concrete, tiles, or compacted soil.

- Walk me through what actually happens when an ADI engineer turns up at someone's house. What's the process from the front door?
- Dave
- First thing we do is establish where the water supply enters the property and trace the pipe route, so we know the path we need to survey. Then the engineer places an acoustic sensor directly on the pipe at one point, and a ground microphone at intervals along the suspected route. The equipment compares the sound at each position and calculates where the leak noise is loudest.

- Exactly right. Acoustic leak detection pinpoints the leak location to within a very tight area, sometimes just a few centimetres, so the team or the plumber doesn't have to rip up half a floor to find the problem. - What about pipes that run under a solid concrete floor, or behind a tiled wall? Does it still work there?
- Dave
- It does, yes, and solid floors are actually one of the most common scenarios we deal with. Acoustic equipment works well through concrete because the sound wave propagates through dense material. Tiled walls are trickier, there's more variance in the surface, so ADI's engineers will often combine acoustic detection with a second technique, like thermal imaging, to cross-reference the result and make sure the location is confirmed before any work starts.

- So it's not always just one tool. You're building a picture from more than one source of information.

- That's the professional approach. Acoustic detection identifies where the noise is strongest. Thermal imaging traces the temperature change that escaping water creates in a wall or floor surface. When both methods point to the same spot, you've got real confidence in the result. Tracer gas is another option we use when a leak is very small and the acoustic signal is too faint to pinpoint precisely.

- What sort of leaks is acoustic detection best suited to? Are there situations where it works better than others?
- Dave
- It performs best on pressurised supply pipes, the pipes bringing cold water into your home under mains pressure. That pressure is what drives the noise. Slower leaks on drainage systems or low-pressure heating circuits produce less sound, so acoustic detection alone is sometimes less conclusive there. For heating systems, we'd often lean more heavily on thermal imaging or tracer gas alongside it.

- For a typical residential property, a full acoustic survey takes a few hours.
