- Right, so the core principle is straightforward. When water escapes from a pressurised pipe, it creates vibration and sound energy. That energy travels outward through the pipe itself, through the surrounding material, whether that's concrete, screed, tarmac, whatever, and an acoustic leak detection device picks that signal up at the surface.

- So you're essentially listening for the leak rather than looking for it?
- Dave
- Exactly. A leaking pipe produces a very specific noise, a hiss or a whooshing sound, and the frequency and intensity of that noise changes depending on pipe pressure, pipe material, and the depth of the pipe. ADI's engineers use calibrated ground microphones and electronic listening sticks to capture those signals across a survey area.

- And in a commercial building you've got pipes running under floors, inside walls, under car parks. Does all that concrete and structure get in the way?
- Dave
- It does muffle the signal, yes, but that's where the technology earns its keep. Acoustic correlators, which are the more sophisticated end of the acoustic toolkit, measure the sound signal at two separate points on the same pipe run simultaneously. The correlator software then calculates the time difference between when the leak noise arrives at each sensor, and from that it works out the leak's position along the pipe to within a very tight margin.

- So it's doing maths with sound travel time, essentially triangulating the source.
- Dave
- That's a good way to put it. The engineer enters the pipe length between the two sensor positions and the pipe material into the correlator, because sound travels at different speeds through copper, steel, and plastic. The software does the rest and gives a distance reading, so the engineer knows where to focus attention without pulling up the entire floor.

- That must save an enormous amount of disruption compared to just digging until you find it.
- Dave
- It does. Non-invasive leak detection is the whole point for a commercial site. A large retail unit or an office block really can't afford to have its floor opened up across a wide area on a guess. Acoustic leak detection narrows the excavation down to the confirmed leak position, which cuts reinstatement costs significantly and keeps the building operational.

- What about very long pipe runs, or pipes where you can't get access to two points on the same run?
- Dave
- That's where ADI's engineers combine acoustic listening with tracer gas detection. Tracer gas locates leaks under solid floors where acoustic signal is too weak or where pipe access points don't allow correlation. The two methods complement each other, and on a complex commercial site you'd often use both in the same survey.

- What does the survey actually look like on the day? If I'm a facilities manager, what am I going to see happening?
- Dave
- The engineer arrives, reviews the site drawings if they're available, and walks the pipe routes. They'll place ground microphones at intervals along the suspected pipe run, listen at each point, and log the signal strength. Where the signal is strongest, the correlator goes on. The whole process for a typical commercial floor plate takes a few hours rather than days, and the engineer can usually give you a confirmed leak location before they leave site.
